Here we give an inside look into what’s going on in the studio
along with fun print related things we find interesting.
Getting a neon sign was one of the first things we discussed when brain storming the decoration for the new shop, it was a must! Dubai has such a history with neon; take a visit to Satwa or Bur Dubai and see for yourself. It lends a real old school vibe to the shop and gives off a nice warm green glow to the reception area.
A lot of people have been asking where we got ours made so figured this would be as good a place as any to reveal! It was of course in Satwa – after about an hour and a half of walking around the area asking light shops, printing houses and cafeteria’s with no luck, we finally looked down an alleyway next to the big bus station to find a cosy little shop called ‘Orbit Calligraphy’.
They are as old school as you get; lovely guys, easy to work with and produce some excellent work! I don’t think they have a website but you can contact them via mobile: 0503542549
Gotta love the 17×23 Nobrow series; a short story project designed to give young graphic novelists the chance to tell their stories in a manageable and economic format. We love these little pieces of printed beauty and have four awesome books from the series available on our online store: http://toilandtinker.com/shop/
Did you know we run a coffee kiosk at the shop? It’s powered by local roasters Seven Fortunes who use specialty graded coffee, sourced directly from farmers in Latin American origin countries such as Guatemala & Costa Rica. To put it simply, it tastes great and hits you up with some creative fuel for the day, served up by our in-house barista megastar Aireen. The service is complimentary so be sure to pop down for a visit and have a cup on us!

Nothing gets us more excited then when a big box of newly ordered books arrives in the shop! These beauties are from our friends at Nobrow Publishing; one of the most exciting book makers around at the moment. Based out of the UK, these guys put a lot of love & care into everything they produce and it’s really felt.
Printing on beautiful paper, collaborating with the best artists and writers around and binding the print expertly; all qualities we can truly appreciate as a print studio. The content ranges from comics to illustration & art with clever writing throughout.
